Purpose: When using the Sites or Public directories in your network home directory, you may, occasionally, need to change permissions to make the files / folders visible to visitors. Below are steps to take to change permissions.

  1. SSH to any of the lab machines in the barnyard or igppweb.ucsd.edu.
  2. Issue the following command:

    Code Block
    chmod -R o+r ~/Sites/

  3. This should make ALL files within your Sites directory readable to visitors to your personal website. If there are certain files that should not be accessible to your website visitors, please make sure to move those files/folders out with something like:

    Code Block
    mv ~/Sites/file to ~/Documents/unpublished/file

  4. These same steps can be applied to files in your Public folder, as well:

    Code Block
    chmod -R o+r ~/Public/

and, If there are certain files that should not be accessible to others, please make sure to move those files/folders out with something like:

    Code Block
    mv ~/Public/file to ~/Documents/unpublished/file
