Determine local display

  1. Open your working X11 window and make sure you are within your local local machine.
  2. Type in the command

    ps -ef |grep X11

    and press return


  3. Look for /usr/X11/bin/X :'number'
  4. The number after the colon is the display.

Set the display

CSH/TCSH

  1. In the window from which you will SSH type

    sentenv DISPLAY :'number'
  • Replace number with the display determined above. Apostrophes are not to be included.

Bash

  1. In the window from which you will SSH type export DISPLAY='number'
  • Replace number number with the display determined above. Apostrophes are not to be included.
