Questions Addressed

  • How do I temporarily pause CrashPlan?
  • How do I disable CrashPlan while I'm at sea?

CrashPlan runs constantly, even when the application is not open.

To pause it:

  1. Open CrashPlan.app (in your Applications folder)
  2. Double-click on the CrashPlan logo (house) in the upper right corner of the window. A text entry field will appear at the bottom of the window.

  1. Enter the following and press Return:
pause (number of minutes you want to pause crash plan, i.e "pause 10000"

  1. This will pause CrashPlan for about 7 days. The number (minutes) can be changed to fit how long you want CrashPlan to pause. If you'd like CrashPlan to pause indefinitely, enter in a large number. 10000000 minutes is about 19 years.
  2. To verify CrashPlan is paused, note the time to next backup below each backup destination (must be in the Backup tab to view this).

Note: Your computer will NOT be backed up until the set time has elapsed or you have manually resumed CrashPlan! It is advisable to use some other backup method during this time.

To resume it:

  1. Open CrashPlan.app (in your Applications folder)
  2. Double-click on the CrashPlan logo (house) in the upper right corner of the window. A text entry field will appear at the bottom of the window.
  3. Enter the following and press Return:
    resume

CrashPlan will either immediately resume backups (you'll notice progress in each backup destination), or time to next backup that appears below each backup destination (must be in the Backup tab to view this) will return to a time within 15 minutes.
